Tie-Dye - #8 - Demonstrate two different types of folds
Stage Eight of Tie-Dye - Use a Kleenex tissue & colored marker to demonstrate two different types of folds one could do on a T-shirt.
Remember that you should have a notepad or printout of your worksheet. The worksheet is located at the lower part of your Computer Screen. If you do not have a printout then take notes so you can put the information needed in the boxes.
Fold the tissue using one of the patterns describe below or make up your own pattern. Once the tissue has been folded, color it with a marker. Then unfold it to see the result.
Below is a list of common modern tie-dying folds and patterns.
The website by Sarah Maker is a fantastic source of information. I find while visiting different sites that all the web authors have great ideas and techiques.
Spiral patterns involve pleats of fabric arranged in swirls around a central point, bundled into a round bun often resembling a cinnamon bun or a snail's shell.
Different wedges of the circular bun are dyed different colors.
Soak the shirt in soda ash for at least 20 minutes.
Fold the shirt in half in a V shape. For a regular V, start from the opposite bottom corner of the collar. For an upside down V, start from the opposite bottom corner of the sleeves.
Fan fold the shirt from the folded edge, making bigger fans as more of the shirt gets involved.
Tie off the shirt with string or rubber bands along the fan folds.
Apply dye to the shirt as desired.
Note that the 'V' shape is achieved by folding a shirt in half vertically, then a line is drawn diagonally from the shoulder area down to the center fold of the shirt. The fabric is then accordion folded along the line and bound into one or more areas to which the dye is applied.
This category can hold several different patterns, the majority of which have nothing to do with each other; they can be combinations or they can be as chaotic as bundling the item to be dyed to resemble a plucked chicken.
I believe this were you become creative. By using a mixture of the different patterns that are available for you to follow. Come up with one of yours.
