Tie-Dye - #9 - Do a Fold & Dye yourself

Stage Nine of Tie-Dye - Once you have seen the outcome of the different folds you have created on tissue, fold & dye an item for yourself. Bandana, t-shirt, pillowcase, etc… Always keep in mind, no two items will be identical, nor will they be perfect. Each item will be as unique as the individual who made it.

Remember that you should have a notepad or printout of your worksheet. The worksheet is located at the lower part of your Computer Screen. If you do not have a printout then take notes so you can put the information needed in the boxes.

Check list before you start your tie-dye project.

Make sure you cover your workspace with a large sheet of plastic before beginning. Make sure you have the proper protection equipment before you start.

After preparing your your cloth, soak it in a solution of soda ash for 20 minutes.

Ring it out and let it dry or you can use it wet ( they say ).

Prepare your dye if you have not already. Does your dye come premixed or do you have to prepare it? Make sure to add Urea to your mix. Suggested from numereous websites to use :

1 cup of urea to 1 gallon of warm warter.

Then mix dye as instructions state or you could use 1/2 cup of dye to urea 1/2 cup.

After removing it from the soda bath, place the item on the plastic sheet and use squirt bottles to spray the dye on to the fabric.

Use as many colors as you like, following the color mixing guidelines presented in the previous sections or stages 5 thru 7.

You may also submerge the item in a vat of dye. Be imagentive in what you want to create.

When you are finished applying the dye, wrap the item in cellophane and let it sit for 24 hours.

Rinse it in cold water until the dye stops running.

Wash it in hot water the first couple of times it is laundered.

Do not wash it with other clothing, as there is a good chance of ruining them.

The following links will share with you the participation of creating different types of tie-dyes. We would love to share your creations on this website but hope your club has a great time doing this honor.
