VIDEO for Stage 5

The following information is taken from the AY Honor for Knot Typing in the Seventh Day Adventist Pathfinder guidelines for this honor. The information is what they suggest to follow while learning the knots. I Mr. D will be adding additional helps to the guidelines that need to be done to meet the requirements of this honor.

Manila

Manila rope is a natural fiber rope made from the abaca (Musa textilis) plant, which is native to the Philippines, relative of the banana.. It is known for its strength, durability, and versatility, making it suitable for various applications, including marine and industrial uses.

Manila rope is resistant to heat and UV, and it holds knots well, which adds to its practicality in different settings. Historically, it has been used for centuries, dating back to ancient times, primarily for sailing due to its robust construction.

Sisal

Sisal rope is a natural fiber rope made from the Agave sisalana plant, primarily grown in Mexico and South America. It is known for its strength, durability, and eco-friendly properties, making it suitable for various applications, including gardening and DIY projects.

Sisal rope is often compared to Manila rope but is generally rougher and not as strong. The fibers used to create sisal rope undergo a process called decortication to extract them from the plant leaves.

Its long history and impressive strength have made it a popular choice among craftsmen and for heavy-duty tasks. ( Wikipedia )

Nylon

Nylon rope is often white, but any color is possible. It has a smooth, silky feeling to it, and it coils easily.

Nylon rope does not float in water. It is a synthetic-fiber rope.

Nylon rope is a type of synthetic rope made from nylon fibers, known for its strength, durability, and versatility. It is strong, weather-resistant, and flexible, making it ideal for various applications such as outdoor activities, camping, and securing tasks.

Nylon rope is popular in homes, industries, and for outdoor activities due to its ability to handle tough jobs, including tying down, climbing, and pulling heavy loads.

Additionally, there are different types of nylon rope available, each suited for specific uses.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene rope is most often yellow, though any color is possible. It is often used in marine applications because it floats in water. The rope is sometimes difficult to tie as it is somewhat stiff and brittle. It is a synthetic-fiber rope.

The easiest way to make an initial identification of a rope is to visit a hardware store where rope is sold. The packaging will tell you what the rope is made of.

If you want to be sure, buy some of each type (with the labeling) or examine it closely in the store.
